Dear Hancock Parents & Guardians,

On the evening of May 16, the mechanical room of Hancock near the cafeteria caught fire due to an electrical short in the main power breaker. Sprinklers were activated and contained the fire. Fire department and district personnel quickly arrived on scene to assess the situation, and the direct fire damage was isolated entirely to the mechanical room. 

I am incredibly grateful to report that because this incident occurred over the weekend when the building was empty, all of our students and staff are safe.

However, the switchgear, which provides power to the campus, was badly damaged and will need to be replaced. Unfortunately, the campus will need to remain closed for an extended period until the replacement is completed.
School is Canceled Monday & Tuesday (May 18–19): There will be no school for Hancock Elementary students tomorrow, Monday, May 18, and Tuesday, May 19. This gives our district team the necessary time to finalize alternative instructional spaces and virtual learning logistics for the remainder of the school year.

Next Update on Tuesday: We will send a comprehensive update to all families on Tuesday, May 19, detailing our temporary operational and learning plans. Please keep a close eye on your email.

Please note that our campus staff will not be allowed inside the building tomorrow, and our team will be working off-site to coordinate this transition. While this is an unexpected hurdle so close to the end of the year, the spirit of Hancock Elementary does not rely on a building. We are fully committed to ensuring our students finish this school year strong, supported, and celebrated.
